Do-It-Yourself vs. Hiring a Professional
Installing an HVAC unit yourself is possible when you have the knowledge and technical skills to back it up. But that doesn’t mean it will be cheaper. Some repairs require special tools that only licensed HVAC technicians can use. Haphazard DIY repairs could damage your system further, causing its efficiency to drop. Also, you will void the warranty since most manufacturers want proof that repairs were done by a professional.
It may seem tempting to do it yourself, especially if you’re trying to save money or enjoy DIY projects, but the risks could outweigh the benefits. For example, let’s say you purchase replacement parts online for your AC system. You research some how-to videos and complete your project. Two weeks later, your AC system stops working. So, you purchase more parts and try your luck one more time. However the AC unit gives out yet again. You finally hire a professional, but they discover that your AC unit is permanently damaged.
Not only did you waste your time and risk your safety, but also your money because you have to replace your entire AC unit, which typically costs thousands of dollars.
How to Save Money on HVAC Repairs
As a homeowner, saving a buck here or there is high on your list of priorities. Unfortunately, HVAC repairs can hinder those savings and have you wondering if your money is part of a disappearing act.
Yes, some HVAC repairs can be more expensive than others, but there are ways to save money on those costs, such as:
- Changing your system’s air filter is top priority. It keeps dust and debris out of your system which maintains efficiency and reduced
energy costs. - Buying an annual HVAC maintenance service contract
- Keeping the area within a 2 foot radius of your HVAC unit debris and vegetation free.
- Replacing unrepairable parts when necessary
- Replacing your home’s old insulation and sealing any cracks in windows and doors to prevent air from escaping your homes.
- Dust or vacuum supply registers and ensure that return grilles do not have any obstructions restricting airflow
